Hi guys, this is Grace, I’m sales director of Rainbow Screen Printing Supply Ltd.
From our work experience, during plastic printing printer’s frequently asked question is, what to do if PP plastic ink has poor adhesion? How to choose a good ink for plastic PP? As we know, PP plastic is a non-polar substrate. Due to factors such as its molecular structure, it has poor adhesion. During the printing or painting process, it is difficult for ink or paint to adhere to its surface. Ink or paint is applied by spraying or printing. On the surface of the base material, undesirable defects such as paint peeling, degumming, and peeling may easily occur.
In order to enhance the coating power of the plastic surface, promote the bonding force between the paint or ink and the base material, and solve problems such as paint peeling or degumming, the top layer of the plastic base material needs to be applied. Common methods include flame treatment, corona treatment, and plastic primer.
1, PP flame treatment
When the plastic surface is pre-treated by flame treatment, the main principle is to cause the plastic surface molecules to undergo an oxidation reaction through high temperature to produce polar groups. The increase in polar groups will promote the enhancement of adhesion and form a strong bond with ink or paint. However, the flame treatment method has poor stability due to process equipment and control processes, and it is easy to burn the substrate.
2, Corona treatment
Corona treatment is a method to enhance the adhesion of plastic surfaces. The equipment is relatively expensive in terms of operating costs, and as it increases, the dyne value of the plastic surface will decay with time. Therefore, time needs to be guaranteed when spraying. Its principle of action is to activate the surface of the plastic by discharge treatment, causing the surface molecular structure to rearrange and produce more polarity.
3, PP treatment primer
The plastic adhesion treatment agent acts as an intermediate layer as primer, acting between the substrate and PP plastic ink or paint to activate the surface of the PP substrate, enhance adhesion and wetting properties, and at the same time, chemically bond with the paint. It is more conducive to the stability and firmness of the coating. The application of PP primers combines intermolecular forces, chemical bonding, and mechanical bite forces after swelling and dissolution of part of the primer to improve adhesion.
So if you’re also find a good ink on plastic PP, or want to solve the problem of poor adhesion, welcome to inquiry with us. If you could send your substrate material to us, we could also do the testing for you.
